The WEB Blues have named six rookies in their squad for the opening game of the 2024 State of Origin series against NSW.

The Blues have made wholesale changes to their side following their 2-1 series defeat to the Maroons last year, with coach Brad Fittler opting for a number of new faces in a bid to turn the tide.

The most surprising inclusion is Jake Trbojevic, who has been named as captain despite missing the majority of last season with a shoulder injury. Trbojevic's selection is a sign of Fittler's faith in the Manly back-rower, who is one of the most experienced players in the Blues squad.

Other rookies to be named in the squad include Penrith halfback Nathan Cleary, Parramatta prop Reagan Campbell-Gillard, South Sydney centre Latrell Mitchell, Cronulla winger Josh Dugan and Wests Tigers five-eighth Luke Brooks.

The Blues will be without a number of their Origin stalwarts, including Boyd Cordner, Josh Jackson and James Tedesco, who have all retired from representative football.

The Blues will be hoping to start the series on a winning note when they take on the Maroons at the MCG on June 5.
